The first games of the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs are in the books, and Montreal, Philadelphia, Ottawa, Colorado, and Phoenix all walked away victors of their respective games.
Just about every news outlet, pundit blog, or everyday idiots' Twitter musings are still in awe that the “underdogs” prevailed against their heavily-favored opponents.
Highlighting this pack’s unlikely charge into playoff success was the Canadiens defeating the Capitals 3-2 in overtime of Game One in the best-of-seven series. “Shocked,” “stunned,” and “disbelief” are only a few words plucked from game recap headlines of this match.

The Philadelphia Flyers received some great news this morning. Leading goal-scorer Jeff Carter was cleared to rejoin the team for practice after an MRI this morning revealed the fracture in his left foot has healed “nicely.”
The offensive boost could not have come at a better time for the Flyers. Fighting to secure a playoff spot, Philadelphia could secure their place should the Rangers lose to the Maple Leafs. The Flyers currently have 82 points and sit in 7th place in the Eastern Conference race.

Canadiens goaltender Jaro Halak is at it again. Coming off back-to-back shutouts for the Habs, the NHL named Halak the First Star of the week. While some attribute Halak's dominance as the main reason the Habs are in a playoff spot, the fact is this is a team effort.
Halak will be in net tonight when the Canadiens face the New York Islanders. A win tonight will advance the Habs closer to clinching a playoff spot, so long as the Flyers and Rangers both lose their respective contests.
Defenseman Jaro Spacek will miss his third game while he recuperates from the flu.

The New York Yankees rounded out their rotation today by naming Phil Hughes as the fifth starter. He joins a formidable Yankees rotation including C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte, and Javier Vazquez. The decision also relegates Joba Chamberlain to the bullpen.
What does this all mean for your fantasy team?

There is the old baseball idiom the season is a marathon, not at sprint. But for the 2010 Houston Astros, it's going to be a marathon of losing. The punch-less Houston Astros are the only MLB team without a win and haven't shown an indication the losing streak will end any time soon. Their anemic offensive and lackluster pitching has them playing terrible baseball and with upcoming series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins, there is no sun on the horizon. The Astros organization are the victims are idiotic management, aging stars, horrible contracts and no minor league talent.

The home stretch of a great season provides an opportunity to look back at the difference makers for not only their team, but the balance of play in the league. Here’s a list top five players who play a wing as their primary position.
No. 5 - Dany Heatley: Heatley was the center of much attention prior to the current season. He wasn’t happy with his role with the Ottawa Senators and was publicly vocal with his displeasure. Senators’ GM Brian Murray worked out a possible deal with Edmonton only to have Heatley deny the movement.
